Nightjar comes alive with the sound of New Orleans funk, jazz and rhythm ’n’ blues as drummer and bandleader Roy Pfeffer takes the stage. Recognised as one of London’s foremost ambassadors of New Orleans music, Pfeffer is celebrated for his high-energy performances that capture the true spirit of the Crescent City.

Pfeffer is the driving force behind The Big Smoke Family, an acclaimed funk collective that has become a staple of London’s live music scene. Regulars at Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express Soho, the band has built an international following and earned the rare honour of being featured on New Orleans’ iconic radio station WWOZ. Their shows are a carnival of groove, rhythm and soul, bringing audiences straight to the streets of New Orleans.

In addition to his funk credentials, Pfeffer co-founded the Cosimo Matassa Project, a group dedicated to celebrating 1950s New Orleans rhythm ’n’ blues. The band brings to life the timeless music of legends such as Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis and Dr John, keeping the roots of R&B alive for new generations of listeners.

Pfeffer also leads his own Roy Pfeffer Trio, a soulful ensemble that blends Mardi Gras street beats, jazz tradition and funky grooves. Their repertoire draws from artists including Grant Green, Horace Silver and Idris Muhammad, offering an irresistible mix of swing, soul and modern groove.

With a reputation for authenticity, passion and unstoppable rhythm, Pfeffer has become one of the most in-demand drummers in the UK. So that is Thursday Throwdown exactly? Each Thursday after 11pm, we’re switching it up at Nightjar. Firstly there will be a free, late set of live music from 11.30 pm. But, better than that, thanks to Don Julio, we’re going to drink like it’s 2010! Our special late-night menu is a nod to the days (and prices!) of when Nightjar first opened, fifteen years ago.

HAILING FROM ITALY WITH A HOME IN LONDON, BANDINI HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS “THE BASTARD SON OF TOM WAITS AND CAB CALLOWAY”. HIS MUSICAL INFLUENCES ORIGINALLY CAME FROM HIS CREATIVE, MUSICAL FAMILY.

HIS GRANDMOTHER, A FORMER CABARET ARTIST, TAUGHT HIM HOW TO CREATE A STAGE PERSONA AND WIN THE CROWD’S ATTENTION. HIS FATHER INTRODUCED HIM TO BLUES AND JAZZ MUSIC AND HIS UNCLE (SINGER-SONGWRITER FOR CHANTANGO) INTRODUCED HIM TO THE ART OF SONGWRITING.

HIS MAJOR INFLUENCES ARE DIVERSE - VAN MORRISON, DR JOHN, TOM WAITS, PAOLO CONTE, AND THE CLASH, WHICH HAVE LED HIM TO FUSE JAZZ, BLUES, ROCK AND GYPSY INTO A DYNAMIC LIVE SHOW.  THIS COMBINED WITH HIS ENIGMATIC AND THEATRICAL STAGE PERFORMANCES HAS LED HIM TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING EMERGING ARTISTS IN LONDON.

Join us in East London for an unforgettable evening of live music with DOM PIPKIn’s All-Star New Orleans Trio. Drawing inspiration from Professor Longhair, Huey “Piano” Smith, Lee Dorsey and James Booker, Pipkin brings the heart and soul of New Orleans jazz, blues and funk piano to the stage.

For more than two decades, Pipkin has been recognised as the UK’s leading exponent of the New Orleans sound. Described by Blues in Britain as “one of the world’s greatest exponents of New Orleans piano,” he has performed at prestigious festivals including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the legendary “Piano Night.” His career spans thousands of concerts worldwide, with appearances on radio, TV, and theatre stages.

Pipkin’s unique style blends driving blues rhythms with rhapsodic classical flourishes, particularly influenced by maverick pianist James Booker. His performances are renowned for their energy, warmth and authenticity, winning fans from Jonathan Ross and Hugh Laurie to Jamie Cullum. On stage he mixes compelling original songs with Big Easy classics, creating a “steaming musical stew” (Classic Rock Blues Magazine) that always has audiences dancing.

Alongside his solo work, Pipkin leads his band The Ikos, bringing the New Orleans tradition to life with drums, sax and rich vocal harmonies. They have headlined at Ronnie Scott’s and lit up the R&B club scene across Europe.

Aisha Khan sings American roots music, Jazz, Blues and Rhythm & Blues of the 1940’s/50’s. With a nod to the glamour and sophistication of a bygone era and over 25 years of experience, coupled with an unrivalled passion for the music, she combines outstanding original material with powerful cover versions and performs them all with class, soul, talent and wit. Equal Parts sultry Jazz chanteuse and Rhythm and Blues belter, Aisha easily communicates heartbreak, joy and a range of emotions in between, continuing to honour the tradition of the true Divas.

Aisha’s earliest influences incorporated everything from Elvis and Sarah Vaughan to Billy Bragg and Northern Soul. Naturally drawn to London’s incendiary Rockabilly club scene, she felt the irresistible pull of black American Rhythm & Blues as a call to action, setting up her first band Tiger Lily and the Jitterbugs, with which she performed throughout the UK and Europe for several years at Jazz, Blues and Rock & Roll festivals, clubs and events.

VETERAN PIANIST TIM PENN. HE IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR MUSICIANS ON THE LONDON BLUES AND ROOTS SCENE. TONIGHT, HE IS JOINED BY THE GUITARIST FROM HIS MAIN BAND THE SECOND LINE, CHRIS PROCTOR.

THEY PERFORM A REPERTOIRE THAT STRETCHES FROM OLD JELLY ROLL MORTON CLASSICS TO THE 50/60S NEW ORLEANS R&B OF ARTISTS SUCH AS FATS DOMINO AND PROFESSOR LONGHAIR, MIXED WITH BLUES, GOSPEL AND SOUL JAZZ AND TIM’S OWN COMPOSITIONS. 

IN THE SEVEN YEARS, THEY HAVE PLAYED TOGETHER AS A DUO, THEY HAVE DEVELOPED AN ALMOST SUPERNATURAL UNDERSTANDING OF EACH OTHER’S MUSIC-MAKING THAT NEVER FAILS TO DELIGHT AND EXCITE THEIR AUDIENCE.
