Rob Picazo
Feb
18

Rob Picazo

As a man caught between two countries, Rob Picazo never really felt Spanish nor English, but music provided an escape into a world that felt warm, welcoming and deeply soulful.

As he explored his father’s vast record collection, the calls of Southern Soul, Rhythm & Blues and Gospel were loud and clear, and so the explosive genius of Ray Charles, smooth Gospel tones of Sam Cooke, and the seductive preaching of Solomon Burke led to an obsession marked by listening, research, and adulation. Over time, all these influences inspired Rob to write songs with themes of vulnerability, intensity and heartache.

Rob’s music travels the map of US Soul, R&B and Gospel, drawing inspiration from the sounds of Chicago, New Orleans and, of course, Memphis in the 60s and 70s. His debut album ‘Soothe My Soul’ was recorded in the heart of Soulsville with a stunning band that featured Memphis legend Charles Hodges on the Hammond B3, Gospel chart-topper Shontelle Norman-Beatty on backing vocals, and members of the iconic Memphis horns handling brass duties. The album was released in 2023 to acclaim in the UK, US and his native Spain.

“A fantastic musician…Soul music that harks back to that real Southern Soul sound” - Robert Elms, BBC Radio London

“Genre-breaking. He has that thing that makes him unique” - Simon Phillips, Jazz FM

“A fine singer, a tasteful guitarist and a strong songwriter” - Bruce Iglauer, Founder of Alligator Records
